Infrared Sauna

infrared-spaInfrared Sauna therapy works by emitting a wavelength of red spectrum waves (far infra red rays or FIR) which are beneficial to the human body. Their safety is undisputed – even doctors in hospitals use them to warm newborn babies. FIR are naturally occurring light waves that we receive from the beneficial portion of sunlight. Unlike other saunas, infrared saunas operate a temperature of 90-145 F compared to a traditional sauna that operates at 185-230 F. The lower, yet more concentrated temperature, coupled with the far infra red wavelength of light that is emitted, creates a comfortable environment so you can breathe easily at longer durations, allowing you to experience the deep therapeutic healing benefits (listed below) of far infrared sauna technology.

Detoxification

Scientific analysis shows infrared heat induced sweat contains 5-6 times more toxins, fat and impurities than normal sweat. A high-quality infrared sauna has tremendous ability to eliminate stored waste (metabolic wastes, environmental toxins, city pollution, fat, cholesterol, heavy metals, alcohol, nicotine – source: Zane R. Gard, MD & Erma J. Brown, BSN, PhN TLfDP, October 1992). One U.S. study has indicated that people using a conventional sauna were eliminating 95-97% water in their sweat. Those using an infra-red sauna, however, were found to be eliminating only 80-85% water, while the remaining 15-20% was mostly composed of undesirable elements such as sodium, fat soluble toxins, sulfuric acid, uric acid, toxic heavy metals, ammonia, and cholesterol.

Saunas or other treatments help to accomplish detoxification in the following manner: A layer of fat and oil exists just below the surface of the skin. Heat from the sauna increases skin temperature, causing those fats and oils to “melt” and ooze out of the skin’s oil glands. As sweat and oil are secreted, the toxins dissolved in them are secreted as well. By excreting these toxins and then washing them off your body, your toxic load is lowered and cellular health improves.

Combined with a guided detoxification program infrared sauna therapy can significantly enhance the body’s ability to mobilize and eliminate toxins – one of most significant underlying causes of chronic disease.

Weight Loss

Our body expends energy to produce sweat (1g sweat requires 0.586 kcal) meaning your body can safely burn up to 300 calories in just one 30-minute session; with sweat loss equivalent to running 10-15km. While this weight can be regained through re-hydration, the calories burned will not. A Far North Sauna treatment can also help to raise your basal metabolic rate meaning you will burn calories at an elevated rate for hours after your session has finished. This can translate to a benefit of up to 800 calories from a single session!

Heart Health

The heat from the infrared sauna causes engages the cardiovascular system by stimulating vessels to dilate to increase blood flow to the surface of the skin and the extremities in order to dissipate heat. This means your heart works harder pumping blood at a greater rate to boost circulation, supplying the conditioning benefits of continuous exercise. Heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate increase, while diastolic blood pressure drops, for improved overall cardiovascular fitness. Studies have also been done on the benefits of the infrared saunas on arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). The Journal of the American College of Cardiology (2001) concluded that repeated infrared sauna treatment improves impaired blood vessel functions in patients with high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and high cholesterol, suggesting a preventive role for sauna use for arteriosclerosis.

If you have advanced heart disease, you must be under the care and guidance of physician before commencing infrared sauna therapy.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) has been widely acknowledged by the medical profession for many years. People suffering from (SAD) can see an increase of metabolic disorders, depression, skin diseases, allergies and conditions caused by impaired/suppressed immune systems. In our cold dark winters when we get as little as 7-8 hours of sunlight per day, the consequences of light deprivation are severe for many people (If you work inside, you may not see sunlight for days at a time). The far infrared rays from our sauna mimic the benefits of natural sunlight, therby naturally elevating mood and combating SAD.

Promotes Relaxation & Stress Reduction

A study in Czechoslovakia demonstrated that sitting in a sauna for 30 minutes doubled beta-endorphin (neurotransmitters commonly released during intense exercise) levels in the blood, which relive pain and may also produce a sense of well-being and euphoria. The relaxation following a sauna may also be due to other chemical changes in the brain. A reduction in stress hormones coupled with an increase in serotonin (associated with elevated mood, relaxation and sleep) induce a deep state of relaxation and promotes better quality of sleep.

Reduces Chronic Joint & Muscle Pain

The benefit of heat for relief from aching joints and muscles has long been understood. Therapeutic heat from the infrared sauna penetrates deep into the affected tissues, causing blood vessels to dilate and thereby improving removal of metabolic waste products and increasing tissue oxygenation levels which promotes healing and recovery. Infrared sauna is used to aid in the therapeutic treatment of chronic arthritis (rheumatoid, osteoarthritis), fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic back pain, bursitis, as well as assist in recovery from muscle, joint and soft tissue injury.

Promotes Healthy Immune System

Infrared Sauna therapy creates artificial “fever” by increasing by the body’s set point for temperature. A fever is the body’s natural defense mechanism to kill microbes by increasing the temperature to a point that certain microbes (i.e. bacteria and viruses) cannot survive. Infrared sauna therapy assists the immune system in raising the core temperature to help rid the body of infections, such as colds and flus.

A study in Germany observed 44 kindergarten children (divided into 2 groups) with half the children partaking in a weekly sauna. Over the following 18 months, the number of sick days due to colds, ear infections and associated illness for each group revealed the children in the sauna group had only half the number of sick days compared to the control group. On site sauna provides supportive treatment for whole body detoxification, pain, skin problems and weight loss.
