Congratulations on taking the next step towards your best health!
My name is Dr. Melissa Blake and I am a registered naturopathic doctor.
My journey towards becoming an ND began in my third year at Dalhousie University in Halifax. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to work in a medical profession. To me that meant helping people feel better. At the time, I knew nothing about naturopathic medicine but life has a way of throwing things at you, to put you on the right path. After a series of events that made me question the direction I was heading, I was lucky enough to connect with a naturopathic doctor who was practicing in Summerside. From the first moment, I fell completely head over heels in love with naturopathic medicine and knew I would spend the rest of my life developing that love.
With renewed purpose, I completed my pre-medical studies at Dalhousie University in Halifax and received a Bachelor of Science. Since graduating from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in 2006, I have been practicing naturopathic medicine at The Pear Tree located in Dieppe and also see patients in my hometown of Amherst, NS. Appointments for either location can be made by calling The Pear Tree at 506-857-1300.
After having two children, naturopathic medicine and how it relates to the health of a family unit, became a strong focus in my life and practice. However, there are many wonderful NDs working in that field and I felt my skills and energy were meant for something else. But what?
In 2015 I was thrown another curve ball. I was diagnosed with cervical cancer and told I would need aggressive treatment. I immediately starting building my wellness team and quickly realized how truly blessed I am to have such an amazing support system and what seemed like unlimited resources. I surprised everyone in the conventional medical community with what little interventions I needed and how quickly I returned to health.
I learned so much in the 6 months it took to get a clean bill of health from the oncologist. I realized how much fear plays a role in any chronic disease diagnosis. And how much this fear can blind you from making decisions that are right for you. I realized that I have so much to offer people who are going thru similar experiences. From initiating an integrative treatment plan to managing the mental head game to helping you find the right people for your wellness team. It gave me the confidence to say what I’ve always known: if you or a family member are diagnosed with a chronic illness like cancer, heart disease, MS, Lyme disease, or any other, you absolutely need an ND on your team.
I am a member of the NS and NB provincial associations of naturopathic doctors, the federal association (CAND) as well as a member of the Oncology Association of Naturopathic Physicians and a board member on the Canadian Naturopathic Coalition Council.
My approach involves finding the root cause of disease with a strong emphasis on mindfulness and research-based natural therapies. My greatest passion is applying an integrative medical approach and working with other health care practitioners in the best interest of the patient.
